Summary[]
Karin Maaka is a 16 year old high school student whose peaceful school life is threatened when she starts to have strange reactions to the new transfer student Kenta Usui. Unknown to any of her classmates Karin is actually a vampire who is determined to protect her secret.
Plot[]
Karin Maaka wakes up in her room and ruminates about how 'it's that time of the month again', she eats breakfast alone and introduces herself a normal high school girl, she takes out a garbage bag left by her mother and leaves for school. At school she is watching her class do PE when her friend Maki Tokitou comments on how she looks unwell and mentions how she always feels 'bad' around the same time every month which she mistakes for Karin getting her period.
Inside the school Kenta Usui arrives late on his first day as he got lost coming from his apartment, he is chided by the teacher who then offers some advice to go through the park to get to school, he goes with the teacher to where class 1-D is doing PE and introduced as the new transfer student. When he introduced himself to the class Karin starts having trouble breathing and collapsed on the bleachers, to Kenta's confusion. When she awakens she is in her schools health office laying in bed with Maki looking over her, she apologises to Maki and thinks about what caused her to collapse. Maki wonders why Karin doesn't just stay home if she feels unwell and comments how she doesn't mind because she got to miss the rest of PE thanks to her. Karin realises it's just her and Maki in the office and she tries to get Maki to leave but she refuses thinking that she's just trying to take a nap and convinces her to come back to class with her.
At class Kenta is given Karin's seat as they don't have an extra spot for him, although uncomfortable with taking someone else's seat he is reassured by a student that Karin is anaemic and won't be returning soon. Unfortunately Karin enters the room soon after and sees he is sitting in her seat, she again has an adverse reaction to him and runs away saying that she's going home. Confused Kenta asks why she ran away and if asked he was making a scary face to which a student says that his face isn't that scary.
In the city an employee at an unnamed company named Ichihra is napping on the job, he is caught and subsequently yelled at by his boss to go make a run which he does unenthusiastically. At the same time Karin hides behind the gym and notices that the sun is still up, she sends a message to an unknown character noting that she will only come at night. She resolves to hide until it get's dark and starts to question why her blood reacted the way it did to the transfer student, upset that her peaceful school life is threatened. Ichihra walks down the street upset at how he is treated at work and wonders if he should leave to a 'more successful company' before deciding to take a break at Shihaba Natural Park. The school announces that it is closing soon and for all students to leave, relived that the sun is finally setting sneaks through the back gate only to be seen by Kenta who is surprised to see her. He wonders if she was just skipping class even though she doesn't seem like the delinquent type before following her as it was his way home but feels weird because it's like he's stalking her.
Karin turns into the park thinking that there shouldn't be too many people there, she thinks about how she can't take it anymore and that 'it's' going to happen again before spotting a man sleeping on a bench. Excited that he's asleep she runs over to where he his before tripping over and falling on her face waking up the sleeping man who is Ichihra, he goes to help her up when she wraps her arms around his shoulders. Kenta who is cutting through the park sees this and hides, shocked that she is doing this in a public place as Karin bites Ichihra's neck but Kenta mistakes this as her making out with him and wonders if she's a prostitute as above in a tree a young girl watches. When Karin lets go of Ichihra the young girl jumps down and sends a bat over to him, he wakes up confused before checking the time and racing back to work, the bat following him.
As Karin and the girl watch Ichihira leave the doll that the girl has starts to berate Karin for being an 'embarrassment', Karin gets upset and it's revealed the young girl is her little sister Anju Maaka, who she accuses of using ventriloquism to make fun of her but Anju says that she wasn't talking and that it was her doll, Boogie-kun, who continues to insult her, calling her pathetic for not being able to erase a humans memory. All the while Kenta hides behind a bush embarrassed by what he saw, unaware of the conversation behind him. Karin thanks Anju for her help and the bat returns and Anju says that Ichihira has returned to his office. At the office Ichihira is working hard much to the surprise of his colleagues and even himself, commenting that he doesn't know why but he's on a roll with his work.
Back at the park Kenta is laying down in apparent shock, noting how the city is nothing like the country as he's already seen so many freaky things on his first day. Karin and Anju walk home together, Karin says how she's feeling much better and Anju comments that their mom should be waking up soon.
